Framework for The Digital North Jutland
Framework for The Digital North DenmarkIn December 1999 the government designated North Denmark to become a national IT Lighthouse – The Digital North Denmark. This step was part of its IT and Telecommunications Policy Strategy (in danish).
During the period of 2000-2003 The Ministry of Information Technology and Research will invest DKK 170 mill. in the IT Lighthouse of North Denmark. Adding to this comes a regional co-financing from public and private enterprises of DKK 340 mill., so the amount allocated for the project adds to DKK 510 mill.
The general object of The Digital North Denmark is to create the future networked society and try out experiments aimed at tomorrow’s IT society. We go for the immediate benefits but also for qualifying future options by disseminating experience to other regions of Denmark.
The Digital North Denmark is basing itself on the positive cooperation between enterprises, the University of Aalborg, the NOVI and a range of public authorities of the region. The aim of the region is to retain and expand its position as an attractive hosting region for high-tech enterprises, financial investors, entrepreneurs, researchers and students.
The IT Lighthouse is aimed at making its contribution in establishing IT based experiments and large scale experiments – targeted at citizens, the educational sector, the public administration, the industrial sector and the infrastructure.
By means of the massive dissemination and utilization of IT in a Danish Region it is the object of the experiment to create an improved cooperation between the public sector, the citizens and the industrial sector involving a maximum number of citizens.
For means to achieve the goal of the experiment the focus will be aimed at:
- expanding and enhancing the technological infrastructure
- enhancing the development of qualifications
- promoting employment and the competitive power of the industrial sector
- enhancing efficiency and service within the public sector
In order to make a successful switch to a networked society, activities should be initiated involving experiments to change the every day lives of the North Jutlanders as well as more advanced experiments. A common requirement to all experiments is the ability to fit into the following four designated themes:
- IT Infrastructure
- IT Industrial Development, E-Business and IT Framework conditions for the industrial sector
- Qualification and Education
- Digital Administration
Along with the actual experiments, concurrent activities are initiated to procure:
- Wrapping up and visualizing goals, values and approaches – for the benefit of other Danish regions
- Evaluation of each experiment and the combined total experiment
- International attention
It should be made clear that The Digital North Denmark should be considered in context with the development already evolving in North Denmark.
