DescriptionThe vision of the PDM project is to enable the museums to put a still larger amount of knowledge at the users' disposal using new ways of presentation and the most recent digital technology.

The project is carried out in a collaboration between AM Production Multimedia, the Skagens By- og Egnsmuseum, and the County of North Jutland, the Cultural Dept. represented by Thomas Østergaard, museum consultant.

The project is supported by the Digital North Denmark, the SparNord fund, and the County of North Jutland.

Purpose, Vision and Objectives
For the Skagen By- og Egnsmuseum the general purpose is using the most recent digital technology to create new ways and rooms for presentation in order to expand and enhance the access of the visitors to culture-historical information and to render a qualitatively improved experience when using the museum.

The vision of the project is to make a still greater amount of knowledge available to the public via the most recent digital technology and the new methods of presentation. Via a great extent of interaction, shared knowledge is made personal - and personal knowledge is being shared.

The objective of the project is, among other things, to make conclusions on qualitative observations of sensory apparatus and the acquisition of knowledge of the visitors via multimedia, including digital presentations.

Ny technology and User Interaction
The project allows involving new methods of visualising in the presentation, and using the multimedia for new and different museum experiences targeted at the individual user(group). This should be done without ”drowning” the traditional presentation or the feeling of historical authenticity in the exhibitional environments. Also the technology allows presenting correlations and themes across an exhibitional section, and for the Skagen By- og Egnsmuseum, across geographically scattered exhibition buildings.

The basic commitment of the project is the user, i.e. the visitor of the museum, and knowledge is acquired and exhibitions and exhibits are experienced via the user interaction with the presentation.

The project is based on new technologies and new user interfaces enabling us to present the content directly to each user - on the terms of the user. Presentations and their content are not only versioned in various languages but also for various types of users, differentiating between children and adults, the experienced and inexperienced museum visitor etc..

The Personal Digital Museum Presentation is a prestige project for those involved in the project but also to North Denmark as a Digital Lighthouse, the nature of the project being unique on both a national and international level.

Potential
The project creates a common aesthetic dimension from a combination of the most recent digital technology, user interaktion and a renewal of the presentational methods of the museums.
The project breaks the limitations that up till now were inherent in the potential of the presentation in museum exhibitions that have been structured as entire historical environments, tableaux etc. The project allows a wide range of museum visitors and users access to knowledge that has not been available to the public up till now for aesthetic reasons or simple lack of room. The technology and the method of presentation is attractive to a large part of the museums of the region and nationwide, no mater if they are in the fields of culture, nature or art. The project creates a universal platform – a sort of basis for this innovative way of presentation, which can be implemented and deployed on a wide scale in the cultural world. This obviously goes for the museums mentioned above, but also for mobile exhibitions, cultural events etc.
