DescriptionIn a cooperation with the independent NetDoktor medical service The Healthy Town Net Shop offers individual health counselling on the Internet. In the first round this will include help to quit smoking and advice on food, diets and exercise. In addition each user will be allowed to create an electronic preventive record (EFJ in Danish) on the Internet protected by a personal password. For example this could be used as a basis for dialogues with one's own doctor on the prevention of illness.

It has been documented that far too many Danes die too young, and too many are in a bad state of health leading in turn to a reduced quality of life. The most common reasons for this are smoking, unhealthy food, and too little exercise. All the while, experience with preventive action proves that one of the routes to take in eliminating these causes is personal health counselling by a professional. Today health counsel is only offered to a limited extension via Healthy Town Shops in the County of North Jutland. However, the Healthy Town Shops are neither covering all municipalities of the county, nor do they get anywhere near reaching all citizens in need of the service offered by the shops. Also the hospitals and general practicioners are expressing a vast need for institutions they can refer to when it comes to health counselling.

So establishing an Internet-based health counselling would be the first step to meet an uncovered demand for life style counselling. The step next would be opening the possibility of reaching citizens who are not making use of health counsel services in Healthy Town Shops nor from their own doctor today. The third step will be establishing a personal electronic prevention journal to provide citizens with an overview of their own state of health to be shared with their own doctor.

Better service to the citizens in the way of :

Electronically enabled health counsel which will mean establishing an easy-to-use and easily accessible offer to provide help for quitting smoking or changing diet and exercise routines. This is important if the citizen is motivated to change habits here and now.

The Personal Electronic Preventive Record (EFJ) means the possibility of a more holistic counsel/treatment to the citizen, as more information on state of health and behaviour would be accessible to the general practicioner.

The Healthy Town NetShop will enable each citizen to acquire updated knowledge of smoking, food and exercise regardless of the time of day or geography.

On the Internet Groups of Citizens could keep a continuous dialog and give mutual support in quitting smoking, changing diet and exercising.

The Project is based on the HealthCentre-platform developed by NetDoktor in connection with the launching of a temporary number of 12 Web sites on health, - also called net communities - in 6 different countries. The HealthCentre platform contains e.g. a general functionality for developing preventive programs and establishing virtual support groups for them. Specifically the NetDoktor has launched a Quit Smoking Net Community in four countries in Spring 2001 containing a Quit Smoking program. The Healthy Town Net Shop is built on this platform.
