| Description | The Goal of the Project
To provide access for a large group of adults with poor reading ability to the increasing volume of text based information made available on the Internet, thereby enhancing their capabilities of playing an active role in their community on equal terms with other citizens in a democratic society.
The Idea and Vision of the Project
To establish a portal on the Internet, the general aim of which is to open texts on home pages to groups with poor reading abilities by means of synthetic speech.
The vision is to provide an offer to have the contents of any home page read aloud from any computer connected to the Internet. All texts, including those on menu bars, buttons etc., should be made readable to synthetic speech. Hence, to make up for their impaired ability to read, potential users should not need any prior training, and they should not need to install any additional software.
In addition to the offer to read aloud, the portal should accommodate a large amount of information of special interest to this group of people.
The task is solved by a consortium of four partners: Escom Data of Hjørring, Centre for Personal Communication, the University of Aalborg, The Technology Centre for the Disabled in Aalborg, and the Special School for Adults in Hjørring.
