DescriptionWith this project the health and social welfare trainees will learn using modern means of communication. They will learn how to make the most of information and communication tools to make themselves fit for future requirements.
Reading, writing, math etc. are essential skills required to get on in our society. The development of the Danish society and the technology we are using require a lot of people to learn using that technology. This includes retrieving information on the Internet, paying bills via the computer, e-business etc.
The basis will be a "classroom on the Internet", a virtual room for learning allowing the trainees to develop skills and proficiency in using the technology.

The project is a co-operation between school (theory) and work experience. The Project comprises 50 trainees, an instructor team of 6 persons, 2 traineeship coordinators, 1 teacher of reading - all working with the School of Hammer Bakker, approx. 100 trainee traineeship guides working on a daily basis, educational officers in several municipalities also from the School of Hammer Bakker.

On a national scale the project is the first of its kind within this field.
The unique feature of the project is that we are developing and testing new learning methods. This happens using the "Classroom on the Internet".
50 of the trainees embarking on the health and social welfare attendant education this September will be handed a laptop computer as a loan. In the beginning of their educational course they will learn how to use this computer. The computer is then to be used as a tool in the learning of theoretical subjects both in school and in practice.
Teaching will be organised according to the principles of problem-based learning (PBL). This means that the trainees will work in groups with a base in problems and tasks they will encounter in their work.
We put great emphasis on encouraging the trainees to share knowledge with each other. The trainees will present their materials in conferences, making them available to the remaining team. Conferences can be regarded as "corners" or "places" in the virtual learning room - "the Classroom on the Internet". For example, the trainees are working with various subjects within the common theme, and by "publicing" their materials they can inspire each other. Communication is computer based.

Another element to form part of the project is the facility to communicate and discuss matters with peers, teachers and traineeship guides. This is of great importance with trainees scattered over wide geographical distances during their work experience periods. Here the trainees - and the teachers and traineeship guides - can get inspiration and experiences to be discussed and treated.

Solving problems and tasks takes knowledge. Information retrieval on the Internet will often pose a relevant route of action to trainees, teachers and traineeship guides. By learning information retrieval on the Internet in their education the prospect health and social welfare attendants will obtain knowledge and skills to maintain and develop their own professional competencies.

Using the technology will make each trainee more proactive in his or her own learning process. This way the project with its one year lifetime will contribute to the furthering of the concepts and ideas underlying the principle of lifelong learning, based on e.g. the readiness and ability to adapt to an existing labour market.
