DescriptionWith The North Denmark Regional Library in charge of the project, all libraries within the County of North Denmark will arrange IT for Everyone -Introductions to the Internet for At Least 10,000 North Denmark Citizens.

The project will primarily aim at developing the IT qualifications of the population on a large scale to make the citizens of North Denmark really capable of utilizing the electronically enabled offers and play an active role in The Digital North Denmark. This in turn will emphasize the libraries as the direct point of access for citizens to a computer and the Internet, and as the facility where everyone can get help in finding their way on the Internet.

The goal of the project is to introduce the Internet to at least 10,000 IT-illiterate citizens, to encourage them in acquiring qualifications that will make them capable of navigating, searching and utilizing information on the Internet and to facilitate their integration in the network of welfare society. This is done by the libraries in a targeted and co-ordinated effort.
Partly a series of free-and-for-all introductions to the Internet will be arranged, where everyone can register, partly introductions aimed at special target groups with special focuses of interest.
The duration of the introductions will typically be 3 hours, partly with group sessions, partly with hands-on sessions allowing the participants to explore the potentials of the Internet on their own. Additionally an educational offer is made to allow for the desires and needs of certain target groups.

The new Public Libraries Act taking effect as per July 2000, made it mandatory for the public libraries to offer public access to the Internet, and all the libraries within the County of North Denmark meet this requirement. An enhanced and more targeted effort in this field will make a natural extension of the already existing course activities.

A half-way evaluation will allow adjustments in the project. The basis for the evaluation will be the questionnaire aided survey among all participants in the Internet Introductions. The questionnaire will provide details on the participants' age, gender, professional background, education, access to own computer, where they observed this offer etc. The questionnaire will also be instrumental in comparing the participants on the open introductions to those on the more targeted introductions.
Further, the evaluation will detect how far out the offer reached, -which demographic groups had their attention drawn to the offer, and even more important, which groups failed to respond. This will enable a further targeting of the project and an enhancement of the public relations effort on relevant spots.

The project will have a home page, which is intended as a means of communication for those sitting in on the Internet introductions. This will be the site for exchanging good Web addresses, asking questions and receiving answers, supporting and helping each other and, in short, form a network.
