DescriptionA Regional Network
6 High Schools are located in the County of North Denmark: Sundhedshøjskolen Diget, Nordsøhøjskolen, Vrå Højskole, Nordjyllands Idrætshøjskole, Aalborg Sportshøjskole, and Støvring Højskole. We are a vastly different lot. Nevertheless we have composed a common project – Net High Schools in North Denmark - making a strength of our differences.
Our goal is to make ourselves the leading users of the newest information and communication technology within the field of high schools.
We intend to integrate IKT in the subjects we are offering already. And we want to build a digital network interconnecting the different schools enabling both students, teachers and other employees to benefit from the other high schools in education and work. This way the project will open the high schools towards each other.

High School on the Net
However, the information technology gives us a way to open ourselves externally and get in touch with a far larger group of people. An Internet Portal will make it possible to run a high school on the Internet, -at least in the sense that we will establish a knowledge bank to make available the expertise held by every high school. This will typically be covering areas like e.g. culture, democracy, athletics, politics or health.
One could imagine the knowledge bank as the first step towards distance learning, which can be supplemented by a stay on a high school of a shorter or longer duration.

Man and Technology
At the high schools we do not educate in a narrow sense of the word. Our education should be - and is indeed based on a deep professional knowledge, still this is about more than just learning or training. It has often been said that we do not educate in the subjects but with the subjects. So it is more important to a high school student that he gets wiser about himself and the life he leads, than training a specific curriculum. This also entails that at the high schools we are focused on the general things, i.e. what we have in common.
This is why dealing with IT on the high schools will be closely linked to discussions on attitudes and values. We will be very concerned about the consequences brought about by a widespread use of technology, especially from an overall understanding of the clash between technology and Man.

IKT Education of Citizens
An essential driving force in the Digital North Denmark is that the dialog and the democratic process should not be kept to the elite. These words could have been spoken by the high schools, too.
We embark on this project in order to investigate in which ways IKT can be made a viable instrument in our daily lives as fellow citizens.
The strength of the high schools in this context is our widespread target group. We host students and participants in courses of a great diversity in terms of e.g. age and a really varied background. However, regardless of age, interests, cultural and social background we are all taking part in the political process, - we are all fellow citizens. This is why utilizing and teaching IKT will eventually be about the capability of the citizens to make an impact on the development of society using knowledge and initiative.
Each high school will offer day and evening classes to citizens in the local district, the topic of which could be how to sort and get an overview of the chaotic turmoil of information, in a way that leaves you wiser, -not just confused on a higher level.
