DescriptionQualification and Quality Development in IT Enterprises” - in short KomIT - is a project supported be The Digital North Denmark.

The project life is approx. 2 years, and it is organized as a network co-operation among seven private enterprises. Five of these develop cell phones or cell phone software. These are Maxon Cellular Systems (Denmark) A/S, Condat A/S, Telital R&D Denmark A/S, Shima Communication A/S and GateHouse A/S. Adding to this comes AlphaShipmate Development A/S, developing marine engine electronics, and TEKKVA Consult managing the project.

The above-mentioned companies are professional developers of software and IT, and each of them holds technological cutting edge qualifications within their specific field. This means that they are closely monitoring the development of new technology in the line of cell phones in both Europe and the USA as well as in Asia. This technology includes new standards and specifications, new components and applications along with new development and test tools.

It would be no overstatement to claim that this type of high tech technology is strongly appealing to engineers, developers and IT developers. This is not least owing to their operating on expanding global markets.

However, other conditions than the merely technological ones are crucial for retaining a market position. The capability of going to market quickly, well functioning products and competitive prices are strong parameters in determining whether the enterprise will survive a fiercer competition.

In order to be better equipped for this kind of challenges, the KomIT network has been formed, to make competitors get together in the awareness that you can learn from each other. The project is especially focused on enhancing the procedures carried out – the tasks that are resolved - in the companies to end up with ready for market products. So the project is not only about knowing new specifications, components or development tools. It is more about optimising the use of the resources already acquired.

In project phase 1 measurements of the software developing performance are carried out. Measurements are carried out by European Software Institute from Spain, who is an expert in such measurements.

In project phase 2 the companies will improve their internal procedures in those areas designated as weak spots by the measuring. Examples of this could be the ways of communicating with customers, how a well functioning co-operation with suppliers is established, how new employees are introduced in the company, and how the most appropriate developing methods are disseminated within the company in a way the leads to all employees using them. This phase makes a good opportunity for the companies to get to know each other.

In project phase 3 new measurements on the software developing performance are carried out for each company. This will detect whether the company has achieved it goals for improvement of internal procedures and workflows.

In the 4th and last phase the network will pass on any experience acquired to any interested companies. This will happen with the aid of the Network Centre of the University of Aalborg with its wealth of contacts to IT developers within software and other products who can make the best of the knowledge accumulated by this project. Those interested are free to contact TEKKVA Consult (see www.novi.dk/tekkva or tekkva@novi.dk).
