DescriptionComputers/IT are part of a lot of people's everyday lives. Here it is important for the elementary school to ride on first class and make use of the potentials offered by the new information technology. This makes the work more exciting to both elementary school teachers and pupils and at the same time the elementary school can contribute to the pupils meeting the skills requirement of the network society.

The object of the project is the development and test of an innovative pedagogical application for the training of general IT skills and proficiency in a subject, which could contribute to the development of qualifications of both teachers and pupils of the elementary school.

It will provide the teachers with completely new ways to go in the design of educational courses. IT should form part of and be integrated as a natural element of the curriculum on equal terms with known teaching aids like pencils, blackboard, calculator, books, films etc. The educational course will be presented as a simulation game that can take advantage of the pupils' imagination.

With a minimal knowledge of IT the teacher should be able to operate the application. This way the use of IT in education should be available to all and not just a few teacher resources.

Simulation games
In a fun, fascinating and pedagogical approach elementary school pupils will familiarize themselves with information technology (IT) in the broadest sense of the word and at the same time acquire knowledge and skills within specific themes / subjects.

Simulation games is a creative way of learning, and being serious with the qualities of creativity is vital. Via creative learning methods the subject qualifications are combined with a high priority to general and social competences. Teaching via simulation games can utilize the imagination and empathy to make the subject ”physical”.

The simulation game should be structured as a role play letting the pupils act as ”Cyber-agents” with the teacher playing the vital part of the ”Game Master”. The learning process should make use of the pupils' curiosity and their own way of relating to things. Each simulation game may contain texts, quizzes, images, sound, animations, videos and communicational tools like e-mail, chat, conferences etc.

Individual Learning
The educational application must include facilities allowing the teacher to pose individual tasks or missions to pupils that can be adapted to the individual pupil's level (language, subject, creativity) – in short, differentiated teaching.

So IT can support the pupils' learning with a basis in their different situations, allowing everyone to experience success, which in turn will stimulate the interest among the pupils.

Effect in North Jutland
The project will offer an interesting collaboration across municipalities and a collaboration between the public and the private sector.

The knowledge and skills obtained by the individual participants in the project consortium by completing this project will be presented to all schools of the county of North Jutland after the project evaluation. This will happen via a public Web site – www.sim-tools.dk.
