| Description | General Purpose:
Today the villages cannot keep up with the technological development, and the fast growth of the various means of communication is concentrated around the larger cities. Owing to the large number of potential users, the new technologies will be established here with cheap and easy access to the broadband networks. The object of the IT village Package is to put the more exposed/sparsely populated regions on the IT map, provide cheap broadband access and access to utilize and explore the host of possibilities. In the village IT should be a natural tool used daily to help the citizens of the village.
The general idea is to compose an ‘IT village Package’, for villages with similar interests and problems to use. The package could consist of a more or less readymade package including all relevant information on updating a village with IT technology. Throughout the process the project will be characterized by great openness. The project includes the following:
IT-station
An IT station will be established at a central location in Bælum to encourage a local sense of community around the IT development. Everyone in the region can get access to a broadband connection for the Internet and get access to e.g. the digital administration of the municipality of Skørping. The facility can be used for an IT help centre, self-tuition and distance learning. The station is run by the users, and a part time employed person will be in charge of the operation of the facility.
Digital Families
A group of 10-20 test families will be established, and each family will have a 'basic package' installed with e.g. ADSL connections and the ability to accommodate one or several IT-technologies, e.g. a Web Camera, IP-telephony, intelligent refrigerators, monitoring domestic facilities and e-business with local shops. New possibilities and technologies will be tested on an ongoing basis. The test families will have their IT qualifications upgraded, and during the project the families will make evaluations and reports on their use of the broadband connection and the various IT packages. The evaluation could include:
- The families' contentment with the digital options in their homes An evaluation of the local Website/village portal
- Time spent on the Internet distributed on the family members
- An evaluation of the digital communication in general and any suggestions
Village Portal
A village server should be hosting the local village network and a local Website/village Portal. All local associations, schools, institutions, vocational professionals and private users are invited to contribute with contents for the digital communication.
The server will work as a Web-/mail server, and all local citizens are offered an e-mail address with the domain of @baelum.dk and @baelum-solbjerg.dk. The choice will be open source software, wherever possible.
IT Village Package
The project is run by a project manager and the board of the IT Station of Bælum-Solbjerg. The results will be compiled and described in an IT Village package to be published to the Internet as a source of inspiration to other village communities.
The project will contain a lot of ideas on how to enhance the local municipality, facilitate a lot of procedures, make life safer to exposed groups and attract new families. For example IT-mini centres are established at nursing homes, and the work continues in fields like IP-telephony, digital signatures and wireless broadband connectivity. The work can be followed on an ongoing basis on the preliminary home page www.baelum.dk
