DescriptionThe project has a lifespan of 2 years, and is organized as a network co-operation among five private enterprises. Four of those relate to the cell phone industry and are providers of product development to the industry. The companies include Maxon Cellular Systems (Denmark) A/S, Shima Communication A/S, ST Microelectronics, and GateHouse A/S. The products developed include entire cell phones, software integrated in components and software for testing purposes. In addition TEKKVA Consult takes part as project coordinator.

The general concept of the project is to formalize a way of exchanging relevant proprietary software in a network of companies in such a way that everyone joining the network will gain from this collaboration. The object of the network is that each company in the network will save development resources within its core business for a more visioned development in general.

As mentioned, the companies involved in this network are closely related to the development of cellphones. However, it is also the object of the project to involve other companies, both within and outside of the cell phone industry with a view to a broad collaboration to share proprietary software within the IT-industrial environment of North Denmark.

It is common for cell phone developers to keep developed software products and information on their origin and existence to themselves. These are trade secrets. The project breaks the thinking in grooves and urges competing cell phone developers to inform each other of products suitable for exchange within the network.

The very feasibility of such a network – the attempt to break down traditional barriers - is owing to the companies of the network considering it a waste of resources that each of them needs to develop identical types of software products. The project is extraordinary in the way that competing developers team up to share certain products.

The content of the project is a concrete exchange of propietary software among the companies of the network. This means that the members of the network will transfer software to each other. The object of this is to bring about several results:

Shorter Developing Time. By receiving software from another company, which would otherwise need to be developed inhouse, time is saved allowing a reduced total developing time for a product.

Increased Reliability. The software products received from another company are considered to be more reliable than if developed inhouse. This stems from the fact that the product has been tested and used by the originating company. From this further matured stage the receiving company will perform its own tests.

Reduced Developing Costs. Two or more companies being able to utilize the same software provides a basis for financial savings.

Potential for Innovation. An actual direct collaboration among competitors could open up to new co-operative relations.

A Stronger IT Environment in North Denmark. The environment is expected to be enhanced and developed via a forum of software developers discussing the exchange and co-operation related to software products. This developing environment should be considered in a wider scope than just that of cell phone software.
