From a ZOO in your Home to Music at the Museum

IT is a strong tool for presenting information. But did you know that it can be used in presenting feelings and moods? The cultural projects under the Digital North Denmark are taking new roads to make cultural experiences even more attractive, relevant and educational. Both to those going for an out-of-your-home cultural experience – and to those taking the cultural experience “to go” – to be consumed in their homes or in the classroom.

Would you care to join in when feeding the polar bears in the Aalborg Zoo. No worries – it’s quite harmless: At he www.kulturnordjylland.dk, which is one of several offers of cultural portals to North Denmark you can watch several film sequences from the Aalborg Zoo – among which the polar bears being fed. This is intended as an appetizer for you when contemplating a trip to the Zoo – indeed not as a substitute.
While most families with young children may go to the Zoo regularly, museums may be places we are visiting when abroad. But actually the museums and archives of North Denmark have got lots of offers. And not just for the eye:
Imagine that you are visiting the Historical museum of Aalborg or the Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum. While walking your way around watching an exhibition you are also in the centre of a peculiar three-dimensional universe of sound created by the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra. The sound is not only supporting the exhibition you are watching – it is a piece of art in its own right.
Or you go to the Skagen By- og Egnsmuseum. At the entrance you will be handed out a mini computer, a so-called web pad that is connected to a barcode reader. Each peace of art on exhibit has a barcode. If you want to learn more about a specific piece, just scan the barcode and you will get a short account of the piece on your portable screen.
Both examples will soon become reality owing to projects under the Digital North Denmark.

Museum in your Home

However, we will not always have to leave our home for a cultural experience: For example a large number of museums in North Denmark are now preparing a large-scale project with thematic exhibitions across North Denmark. Exhibitions can be experienced via the Internet. And the Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum is providing us with access to a digital art school to make us acquainted with modern art.
Generally the museums of North Jutland are putting in a great effort to render the museums alive via the Internet – and many of those projects are supported by the Digital North Jutland.
But even to local citizens finding ones bearings in the cultural landscape can be difficult. Therefore several projects are working to provide us with an overview via easy-to-use portals on the Internet – portals describing options we have for experiences – and their location. Others have developed practical search tools across museums and archives enabling us to find what we are looking for – without having to know on which museum or archive the information is located. www.noks.dk is a good example.
