Mobile time management – a Business in Cyberspace

E-business not a new feature. Still, it is interesting if it can open new markets. Here e-business within the public sector is a fine example. And in the private labour market experiments are performed with new and innovative methods to use information technology as a management tool.

To many enterprises the public sector form a considerable part of the customer base. Only very few are considering the county and municipalities of North Denmark as purchasing customers – but the municipality of Aalborg alone makes annual procurements at the worth of two billion Danish Kroner! So vast resources in terms of staff and money can be saved in a streamlining of procurement.
The County administration is currently working on a large-scale project under the Digital North Denmark with the object of introducing e-business in the entire business procedure between the County of North Jutland and its suppliers. Among other things this requires suppliers to be capable of electronically handling documents like purchase orders and invoicing, so it also involves the businesses in restructuring their procedures in a process of streamlining towards e-business. The county of North Jutland is aiming at becoming the first county to introduce full scale e-business, so both private enterprises and public administrations nationwide are expected to be monitoring this DDN project very closely.
But not only in the business between the public sector and private enterprises is the IT technology posing new challenges . Logistics can also be made efficient and streamlined – and right now several projects are working with experiments within the field of logistics. One of the projects focused on both business and logistics involves fresh fish brought directly from the fishing boat to the end consumer in max. three days. To Skagenfood the Internet-enabled fish subscription arrangement has proved successful – to such an extent that the enterprise was awarded the first prize in e-business 2002. Now it is working on new logistics solutions to ensure the most efficient and resource saving methods of distribution to the customer.

Transportation Contractor on the Web
In need of transportation? Wouldn’t it be a benefit to know in advance, which carrier would have capacity and time available to take on your transportation job within the time limit required – and who would be the cheapest. As an experiment this can be checked out on the web, thanks to the Transport and Logistics Solutions for E-Business project.
Among small and medium-sized enterprises only few would associate VVS-businesses with cutting edge technology. But this is a fact: A DDN project is working with a project combining several known technologies into a unique system to ensure both a considerably enhanced time management – and in turn substantial savings in administrative work. Using a bar code system, a bar code scanner and a mobile phone with GPRS connectivity the plumbers are relieved of the paperwork filling out timesheets, the mobile stock is better monitored, the customer will receive a more accurate invoice etc. Learn more about the project attracting international attention on www.denmobilemedarbejder.dk
