DescriptionToday a number of Danish museums already present their collections using digital technology. They normally feature an extremely small information bank, holding information on artists and works.

The idea of the DDN project is to build a visual art database, the first in this country, including presentation modules with a pædagogical and highly presentation minded focus on art appreciation. The interaction between significant works of modern art of Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum and a comprehensive guide in art appreciation and the analysis of imagery will put a focus on modern art.

In addition the interest, interaction and presentation will be emphasized through the production of three short video portraits of artists working in North Denmark with painting, weaving and sculpturing.

Today arranging educational calls to museums is associated with a fair share of hassle by students and teachers. The tools for a general understanding of art – and modern art in particular, are limited, scarce and random. There is a serious need for a comprehensive Danish information and educational portal to facilitate the understanding of modern art – and a digital approach in particular. A portal ”featuring it all” – with a progression from a spontaneous and experience related approach going along with an analytic interpretative approach that will put things in a perspective.

Today we are in lack of such a pedagogical and presentational portal in Danish! This is an impediment to the pedagogical impact of visual art presentation – and especially the young students' approach to imagery – the ”established art” in particular. The competence of image appreciation in most young people is thus to a large extent reduced to a passive and unreflected consumption of blatant pulp images produced by the media. By taking advantage of the young students' IT and computer skills and deploying qualitative tools as sparring partners the DDN project will offer both students and teachers a needed boost in working with visual art.

A knowledge of art – or the joy of art - is difficult to quantify. It will, however, be an indicator of the success of the digital visual art presentation portal, that a large number of schools and institutions are making use of this service. The need for an online art presentation can be measured on the ”hits”, recorded on the server – and derived activity can be traced on the Intranets of the schools that will be connected to the DDN project. The collaboration among institutions concerning the presentation of art will also create new concrete working methods – and have an effect back on the original theme: The Understanding of Culture and Art.
