DescriptionWith the "Face to Face" project the County of North Jultand Institute af Language, Speech and Brain Disorders intends to establish an offer for distance teaching to aphasiacs.
Using distance teaching as an approach will enable an extension of the rehabilitation of patients suffering from aphasia and make the rehabilitation more effective. Such an offer could be tailored to the "energy patterns" of the individual patient with a high degree of flexibility in terms of time and contents. By teaching in the homes we also hope to enhance the contact to the nearest relations, thereby enabling a high degree of involvement.

Distance teaching in its traditional sense based solely on conferences and mails can be difficult to practise for communicationally challenged persons as it is often necessary to support the spoken language by gesticulation and a visual reading of articulation.

So considering the target group, two factors are important to quality and effect, namely the possibility of a synchronous visual and auditive contact and an available user interface.

In the PictureTel 550 communications system we see a scope for adding a new didactic and pedagogical dimension to rehabilitation. As opposed to traditional distance teaching, it will be possible to create an active and attentive dialog with body language supplementing written and spoken language.

The goal of the ”Face to Face” project is to test and investigate the effects of the use of this synchronous audiovisual communications system, both as an approach in relation to the rehabilitation of language and as an alternative means of communication for the aphasic patient.
Also our goal is to further develop methodologies and material for use in the therapy sessions for aphasiacs.

It is our intention to perform sessions via the PictureTel 550 communications system enabling the therapist and the aphasiac to view each other ”live” in a synchronised picture and sound quality. PictureTel is an easy to use and readily accessible video conferencing system for desktop pc's. The system works via a PCI card containing memory, processing power and codec, compressing and decompressing sound and picture. This renders a considerably better picture quality than a traditional WebCam. The PictureTel 550 system includes a headset with microphone and a camera to be placed on top of the user's monitor. The system connects to the outside world via ISDN-lines or IP services offered by the tele carrier - for example ADSL. If the user wishes to speak to another user within a closed network (a company LAN or WAN), the LAN-socket is used for the user's pc, and communication is transferred as IP based traffic. The communications system is duplex.

Once the pilot project is up and running, the intention is to enable the participants to communicate with people outside of the ”therapy network”. For this purpose we are considering to create an icon controlled portal in order to allow as many as possible to make use of the external network.

We hope that the project can contribute to an enhancement of the communicational skills of aphasiac patients – both in the process of rehabilitation and in relation to the social integration and contact, a general participation in social debates as well as becoming resourceful via e-business/e-banking etc. Another goal of the project is to utilize and expand the communicational skills acquired for bridging to other professional groups, eg. Institutions, home care and associations).
